China is well known for its highly developed and nearly universally accepted digital payment systems, which are continuously being optimized for foreign visitors.
Mobile Payments
The most popular and convenient payment method in China is via your mobile phone, but keep in mind that the payment Apps you are used to in your home country may be uncommon here. The two most commonly accepted apps are WeChat and Alipay.

Debit/Credit Cards
Debit and Credit cards with Union Pay, Visa or Mastercard logos are accepted at major commercial centers. However, with the rise of mobile payments, cards are becoming less and less commonly used, and this is especially true with smaller venues like standalone restaurants, bars and street-side shops.
Cash
All sellers in China are required to accept RMB cash, and you may withdraw RMB from bank counters and ATM machines around the city. However, keep in mind that cash is increasingly uncommon in daily transactions, and salespersons are so accustomed to electronic payments that they may not have enough change.

III. Transportation
FROM THE AIRPORT TO DOWN TOWN
Taxi: When arriving in Hohhot, most tourists prefer taking a taxi. You can follow the English signage to get to the taxi waiting area. The taxi service is available 24 hours a day, and the fare to the urban area is roughly between 20 and a few dozens yuan. Considering that most taxi drivers don't speak English, it is advisable that you prepare a printed copy of your destination address written in Chinese before your arrival in Hohhot.
Metro: Hohhot Metro is a convenient alternative. The Bayàn (Airport) Station is located at Hohhot Baita International Airport. Entrance: located on east side of the airport parking lot (follow signage). If you arrive by train, you can transfer to metro at both Hohhot Railway Station and Hohhot East Railway Station directly. Tickets: Use self-service ticket machines or visit the manual counter (supports WeChat Pay, Alipay, or cash).
Airport Bus: Ticket Booth is located opposite the exit of the arrival hall at Baita Airport. The fare is 15 yuan per ride (supports WeChat Pay, Alipay, or cash). Staff may not speak English, it is advisable that you prepare a printed copy of your destination address written in Chinese before your arrival in Hohhot.
Ride-Hailing (Didi):

What is Didi?
Didi is a one-stop online ride-hailing service platform. With Didi, you can hail a car within just a few minutes by simply tapping with your fingertips. Didi is a safe, reliable, affordable, convenient and efficient transportation app that offers round-the-clock service and with an English interface. Passengers can request various types of vehicles driven by independently contracted drivers who have received professional training and qualification certification through the platform. Moreover, Didi has a safety protection system. You can directly contact the nearest police station when there is emergency.
What Do I Need to Install DiDi?
An active Cell Phone Number (Chinese and foreign numbers both work, pick one you would use in Hohhot to register)

How Do I Install and Use DiDi?
Step 1:Download the "DiDi: Ride Hailing in China" App from the Android or iOS App Store

Step 3:Order Your First Trip
DiDi will search for the closest cars among your selected vehicle types– so the more vehicle types you select, the more likely you will find an available car near you as fast as possible.
DiDi is now searching for your nearest trip.
If you feel it is taking too long, you can select additional vehicle types you originally excluded for a faster response. A description of the response time and upfront fare of each vehicle type can be seen.
If you need to cancel your trip for any reason, click "Cancel Trip." No payment will be made.
If you did not select additional vehicle types, the estimated fare of the vehicle type you chose will be paid automatically once the latest trip is confirmed (no action need). If you did add additional vehicle types, click "Confirm" to pay the corresponding fare of the vehicle type actually picked you up.
Step 4: Take Your First Ride
On this screen, you can perform a few other actions if necessary:
Call the driver by clicking "Call" to share any immediate information – especially useful if your registered pick-up location is slightly different from where you actually are and would like to be picked up (i.e. on the opposite side of the street). Please be aware, most drivers only speak Chinese.
Not a Chinese speaker? Don’t worry! Click "Message" to send frequently used messages with just one click that are automatically translated between Chinese and English. You can also add a new "Quick Message" that will be saved and listed on this screen next time.
To cancel your trip for free, click "Cancel" in five minutes after your trip request was confirmed – the exact time is displayed on the bottom left of the screen. If you cancel your trip after 5 minutes, a cancellation fee will be applied (varies depending on how long the driver must wait).

Step 5:Pay for Your First Trip
During the trip, you can check the real-time map on the DiDi app anytime to view the expected time until arrival at the drop-off location and green, yellow, and red colors on your route for traffic indication.
Once you arrive at your location, you can leave without paying on site. This is extremely efficient when you are pressed for time or have a busy schedule. The next time you use the DiDi app to order your next trip, you will need to pay for the previous trip through the Didi checkout process.
On this screen, you will see the final trip cost. You can click "Cost Details" to view detailed cost details. Click "Pay" to pay the final cost not yet covered by the upfront cost.
Select the payment method you would like to use from the list on the screen. Click "Pay ¥XX CNY".
Follow the payment process and fill the password of the selected payment method until the "Payment Successful" page is displayed. The example below shows the WeChat Pay payment process.

Shared Bikes
How to Use Shared Bikes in Hohhot?
Hohhot’s flat terrain makes it ideal for cycling. Shared bikes and e-bikes are widely available along most roads, and many destinations are within cycling distance. You can park the bike near your destination in designated areas.

Shared bikes are available in three colors: blue, yellow, and turquoise. They are operated by three different companies and each has its own merits. Different color bikes are operated through different apps. Alipay, a comprehensive payment app, is foreign-language friendly because it has a built-in translator. Step-by-step instructions with pictures on how to use a shared bike through Alipay are as following.
1.Open Alipay and Select "Transport".
2.Select "Bike" and press Scan to unlock.
3.Scan the QR code on the bike.
4.Press "Confirm unlocking".
5.Upon reaching the destination, park your bike in designated areas circled by white marks on the road side, then press "I want to return the car (bike)".
Note:
For bikes in yellow or turquoise, the scanning screen pops up twice because they are external suppliers for Alipay.
Yellow bikes do not need to "confirm unlocking" that will unlock automatically after scanning the QR code.

Subway
How to Take the Subway in Hohhot?
Taking subway in Hohhot is a convenient way to travel, with stations near tourist attractions, shopping districts, and transport hubs. You can purchase tickets in four ways:
1. Use Alipay’s Metro QR Code for a cashless ride.
2. Buy tickets from self-service machines at any subway station.
3. Purchase tickets at a ticket counter with staff assistance.
4. Use the “Qingcheng Metro” subway QR code for quick access.
How to Use the Alipay Metro QR Code?
As we mentioned, Alipay is one of the most important apps in China besides WeChat. You need to set it up by linking it with one of your active bank cards (both Chinese and international bank cards work for this)to fully use it.
You can find the steps for setting up a Metro QR code for Hohhot on Alipay below. You can switch 15 available languages in Alipay if you don’t understand Chinese.

1. Open the Alipay App and tap "Transport"
2. Choose "Metro" on the upper middle, then tap "Get now"

How to Buy Tickets from a Self-Service Machine
Upon entering a subway station, you can see the self-service ticket vending machine. Go there and tap your destination on the screen, and you can purchase your ticket using coins or banknotes (only 1 yuan coins and 5, 10, or 20 RMB banknotes are accepted). Alternatively, tap "Scan to Purchase" at the bottom of the screen and use WeChat Pay or Alipay to scan the displayed QR code. Fares vary depending on the travel distance.
The self-service ticket machines offer Chinese, Mongolian, and English options. Select your preferred language.

1. Open WeChat and search for the "Hohhot Bus" mini-program, then tap "Bus QR Code".
2. The app will automatically redirect to the "City Pass" mini-program. Select "Activate Now" at the top of the screen, then tap "Get Now".
3. Check to agree to the terms and conditions and follow the prompts to select a payment method.
4. Once the setup is complete, you’ve successfully obtained the bus QR code—scan it to ride the bus.
Use Cash to take bus
You can still pay with cash when taking the bus, but please note that drivers do not provide change. Make sure to prepare 1 RMB banknotes or coins, as most bus fares are 1 RMB.

At present, foreigners who hold identification documents other than the Chinese national ID card usually register their identification documents on-site and obtain a resident health code when seeking medical treatment at medical institutions in Hohhot. Patients can access medical services with the resident health code. Foreign travelers can go to the hospital by themselves.
